Actually, he’s apparently being named TODAY! Buzz at the new fanboy site Heroic Hollywood, known rumor starter and maker upper of scoops Umberto Gonzalez is reporting that following J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson, Colin Trevorrow (he of Jurassic World financial success and sloppy movie fame) will be taking on Star Wars Episode 9 as director. Is it true? Time will tell. It is Comic-Con time though and if news is going to be announced, it’s a good guess it will be this weekend in San Diego.
To be fair, Gonzalez has a pretty good track record at scoops…or at least he’s really, really good at floating them out alongside other fanboy bloggers. And other scoops are kind of foregone conclusions that he touts as scoops when they’re really just poorly kept secrets. I also don’t really consider the idea that Colin Trevorrow will be directing the third new Star Wars installment all that big of a scoop or even huge news. He could get announced and then removed (or, move on) later ala Edgar Wright with Ant-Man and Josh Trank who was removed from one of the Star Wars standalone films.
All that being said, I hope Trevorrow gets the gig because even though I wasn’t particularly keen on Jurassic World. I don’t place the blame at Trevorrow’s feet. A silly script and bad dialogue can rarely be saved by a good or even great director.
