Back when the Internet was just getting started and people were still relatively nice to one another in cinematic circles, I became friends online with a young, aspiring filmmaker named Joe Swanberg. Cut to 2015 and I’m still friends with him and still involved in film website type activities but my pal Joe is about to blow up, at least in cinematic terms.
With 27 (!) directing credits to his name is just over a decade, Swanberg finally broke through to the mainstream in 2013 with his excellent film Drinking Buddies. That film allowed him to work with better known actors (Anna Kendrick, Jake Johnson, Ron Livingston, Olivia Wilde…just to name a few) than his previous efforts and since then, his films have been fairly star studded.
His latest effort Digging For Fire (which made its debut at this years Sundance Film Festival) is a monster ensemble of famous celebrity types like Orlando Bloom, Rosemarie Dewitt, Sam Rockwell and Sam Elliott. Rounding out the cast are Mike Birbiglia, Brie Larson and Chris Messina. Plus, there’s more including new Swanberg regulars like the aforementioned Jake Johnson, Ron Livingston, Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynsky and Jane Adams. The whole film looks like a ton of fun and I couldn’t be prouder of Joe and I encourage you to see Digging for Fire when it drops on August 21.
